Winter Duties

1/19/2016

Winter means it's time to restock the fly boxes.  With below freezing temps and typical Maine winter weather, we've been busy on the fly bench.  Grabbing a warm beverage or a cold beer and tying up a dozen flies is enough to keep us daydreaming until spring arrives.

My favorite part about tying flies isn't about reliving memories of fish caught last year, although it's a close second.  It's about tying one of my favorite flies, the old partridge and orange.  I love the thought of using feathers from birds that I've shot here in Maine and using them to catch beautiful trout.  It's the best of both worlds, fishing and hunting, and there's something that feels good about catching a fish with a fly that you tied from a bird that you shot.

As the snow falls outside, take a minute to sit back and think about last year's fishing season, as well as daydream about the season ahead!
