It has been a busy month of May for us. Weather has ranged from 75º and humid to 30º with light snow falling and gusty winds. Many clients (lots of them new to fly fishing) have been out on some of our favorite waters and hooking up with fish. It can be difficult for people to catch fish if you've never fly fished before in just a few short hours, but with good casting practice some new anglers have been able to hook up for the first time on the fly. It's always cool to see somebody catch a fish for the first time on a fly rod.
From Grand Lake Stream to Southern Maine and up in the Rangeley area, we've been on the water. In Southern Maine, fishing has been really good, but you need the right presentation as these fish see lots of flies. We've been finding that the size and color of a fly pattern are not as important as imitating the exact behavior of the caddis or mayflies that we've seen. Hendrickson and Quill patterns have been the ticket on Southern Maine waters. Nymphing and streamers have been the "go-to" flies in Western Maine. The dry fly fishing is just starting to heat up in the North Country. We'll be in the Rangeley region and the Belgrade area over the holiday weekend. Hopefully we'll have some great photos and stories to share. Get out there and enjoy!
